THE construction of a sh1.5b children’s hospital has started at Nyamitanga. The Mbarara Archbishop, Paul Bakyenga, said the Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital Mbarara will have a capacity of 120 beds and would improve medical care for children.

He was on Saturday speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony for the hospital. Bakyenga said the church was committed to ensuring that people were not sick, adding that missionaries established clinics, dispensaries and hospitals in the areas they visited.

“It is our duty as elders and leaders to support children so that they can be able to realise their destiny. Throughout history, the church was mandated to preach and heal,” he said.

He added that according to statistics, 17,000 children of ages 0-12 years die of malaria yearly in Mbarara.

Dr. Placid Mihayo, the chairman of the project committee, said the facility would be built in two phases.

Blocks with a capacity of 60 beds will be built in the first phase, he said.

Mihayo added that the hospital would specialise in paediatric care for children of 12 years and below.

He cautioned the contractors, Block Technical Services, against shoddy work.

The LC5 chairman, Wilberforce Rutashokwa, commended Bakyenga for initiating the project to which he contributed sh500,000.

Mbarara businessman Francis Mwebesa donated 200 metallic bars worth sh6m and mayor Wilson Tumwine gave sh350,000.

MP Emma Boona contributed sh500,000.
