Dr. John Waliggo was a real ecumenist

I wish to thank The New Vision for the glowing eulogy of the Revd. Dr John Mary Waliggo and for mentioning his many achievements to the church, academics and the public.

I wish to thank The New Vision for the glowing eulogy of the Revd. Dr John Mary Waliggo and for mentioning his many achievements to the church, academics and the public.

I worked with him in ecumenical circles and in a country and world that has strong tendencies towards religious sectarianism, Waliggo was an ecumenist. In church circles ecumenism means searching for church unity in diversity, not conformity, and even allowing oneself to be persuaded by the other side.

The idea is not an imperialistic one, but one that urges the common good or human flourishing. Like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Waliggo stood within his Catholic faith — not outside it or from some supposed neutral ground—and expressed solidarity with all those who seek an integral salvation.

We shall miss him. But we shall also celebrate his achievements and the way he enriched all that he came in contact with, especially through his conviviality. May his soul rest in peace!
