Army retirees complain
MASAKA-Over 90 retired UPDF officers attached to the Armoured Brigade have petitioned the President over their delayed retirement packages and monthly pension. The officers, who retired on April 21, said they were promised payment by May 12 but they had received nothing. “We have been lining up at the banks for the past three days in vain. We are starving, how are we going to cater for our children’s school fees?” one of them complained at The New Vision offices recently. Another, preferring anonymity, said they were roughed up at the army headquarters in Bombo, Kampala, when they went to claim their savings from the Wazalendo Army SACCO.

Three held over theft
MUKONO-The Police are holding three men over stealing iron bars worth sh4m from an orphanage. Moses Mutebi, Joseph Nkondo and Gonzaga Ndugwa are said to have vandalised a fence and stolen 135 angle bars from Vision for Africa International, an NGO that cares for orphans in Kyampisi sub-county. Owacha Kazi, the district CID chief, said the suspects were arrested on Saturday as they transported the metals to Kampala. They will be charged with theft, Kazi added.

SCOUL builds camps
MUKONO-The Sugar Corporation of Uganda (SCOUL) has invested sh140m in constructing two new camps for its plantation workers. Nagojje and Wantuluntu camps, located in Nagojje sub-county, will house over 100 workers. This brings to 56 the number of camps, accommodating over 30,000 people. Workers’ MP Joram Pajobo urged investors to prioritise their employees’ housing and welfare conditions. “If workers sleep and eat well, their productivity will be high. I will never stop praising SCOUL for offering good housing and sanitation for its workers,” Pajobo said last week at the commissioning of Nagojje camp.
