THE closure of Kyambogo University in March, after a series of strikes, has led to the creation of a crush programme with an enormous workload for staff and students. The university is to run without a break. Angela Asiimire spoke to some individuals.

William Kayongo, Guild President:

It’s a crisis we should accept, or else the system will run down. The students should not panic, but be vigilant and follow the timetable.

Sophie Isingoma, BA Management Science, 2nd Year:

It’s going to be stressing and financially difficult. We have to start reading now.

James Bulenzibuto, public relations officer:

It will be tough on the students no doubt; it will require sacrifice. What has happened ca not be changed. The teaching staff are going to have a rough time, since they have to mark examination scripts and teach at the same time. The administration will just have to do its best.

Alex Mugenyi, BA SWSA, 1st Year:

I had planned to get a part-time job but now that the programme is fixed, I don’t know what to do. They’ll soon ask for tuition fees... I don’t know what I am going to do!

Sarah Nalubwama, BA SS, 2nd Year:

It’s going to affect our performance. Second Year exams will be done in Third Year. It’s really bad. We are going to be confused.

Godfrey Twahirwa, BA SS, 2nd Year:

Things are being done in a hasty manner. Instead of having our graduation time postponed, we shall just have to bear with the pressure.

Maureen Babirye, BA Procurement & Logistics, 1st Year:

If the university decides, we have no option because we have to catch up. Students should realise that it’s us who are losing and not the administration. We just have to read and be serious.
