Coffee brewers off to Denmark

IT is smooth, round and brown-bodied, and keeps you up all night…So alive and invigorating that you will ask for more. No, not a person. This is the language of coffee brewers — baristas.

Such was the description Philip Gitao, the executive director of East African Fine Coffees Association, gave a cup of coffee he brewed on Friday. This was at a cocktail to bid farewell to three baristas set to represent Uganda in the World Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark, from June 19 to 22.

“Isn’t it amazing how we, in the coffee fraternity, describe coffee just the same way we describe our women?” Gitao quipped, sending guests into frenzied laughter.

Peter Musana, the head barista at the Kampala Serena Hotel, Claire Rwakatogoro and Emmanuel Katongole will participate in the championship.

The trio will be judged on the preparation of three coffe varieties: cappuccino, espresso and a specialty signature drink.
