When utl established a base station at Jinja’s Masese landing site recently, a ‘dilemma’ arose among the fishing community. Recently, utl took the “extend your talk” promotion to the landing site.

From the moment the performances took off, the crowd was in delirium with all eyes transfixed on stage. For many, it was a new experience as they took turns to cheer Tool Man, Sweet Kid and Bebe Cool.

Known for their high propensity to spend, the fishermen deemed the sh45,000 Katikitiki phones cheap and duly lavished women with the phones, as tokens of love.

There was a dance competition between the locals which were won by a local ‘Shakira’, who won a fully-connected phone for her exploits. She also won a set of admirers and needed to be guarded. What caught the residents off-guard were the fireworks; some people scampered off to safety.

At prize-giving time, the excitement was at fever pitch. Interestingly, Jamal Ntambi, one of the winners of a generator, confessed he had gone to spy on his wife as it appears most of the women gifted with new phones by the fishermen were married!

Paul Muwanguzi also won a generator. However, the biggest winner of the evening was Juliet Kaduyu, a kiosk operator, who won a motorcycle.

utl’s product manager, Ronald Tashobya, said this had been one of their most engaging promotions.
