AFTER 32 years of heartbreak, the Ugandan Cranes look set to, at least, make a return to the Africa Nations Cup after drawing 0 – 0 away to Angola yesterday in the qualifiers for the continental competition.

Since losing the 1978 Nations Cup final to Ghana, the Cranes have launched successive futile campaigns. But the draw in Angola means Uganda has taken charge of its own destiny with two games left in this first phase of qualifying for the 2010 World / Nations Cup. Two wins against Niger in September and Benin in October will put the Cranes in contention to advance to the decisive round of qualifiers next year.

The Cranes put up a gallant defensive display to frustrate the home side. They had the best chance of the match when captain Ibrahim Sekagya fired in the side netting 17 minutes into the match. The team is expected back home on Thursday (See story P40).
