TULLOW Oil, one of the companies exploring for oil in western Uganda, is to set up modern schools in the area to promote education to boost the livelihoods of the locals.

Brian Glover, the general manager, told Fred Lukumu, the Buliisa LC5 chief that the company would also provide clean water to promote sanitation and sporting activities. Glover disclosed that the company would also set up measures to save lives on water through sensitising the fishing communities on the dangers of using unsafe water transport and fishing means.

Observers believe that this move would help Buliisa district overcome its illiteracy rate, which stands at 63%.

The district has a classroom stock of 143 out of the required 269, with a school drop out rate at 46%.

“We have a number of corporate social responsibility projects that we intend to implement in the communities we operate in,” Glover explained.
