IT has emerged that Uganda Motor Club (UMC) was banned a month ago following a bitter financial dispute with Motorsport Africa Club (MOSAC).

Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) banned UMC from organising any activities this season after they failed to settle a sh2.5m debt with MOSAC.

The FMU competitions committee consequently granted newly formed Jinja Motor Club the rights to organise the Independence Rally due in October. The event is traditionally organised by UMC.

UMC president Fred Mugerwa (left) explained that the club opted for a ban because it could not afford the sh2.5m.
The body was penalised for postponing last year’s edition of the Independence rally to a date on which MOSAC was to stage a sprint.

“We are not in the sport for money. We thought we would compensate MOSAC from proceeds at the super special stage in Jinja but few spectators turned up.

“We were willing to pay MOSAC sh1m from other sources but they refused,” Mugerwa said.

At the same time, Mugerwa said that GTV has shown interest in partnering with UMC to stage the rally.

Meanwhile, lady driver ‘Super Lady' Susan Muwonge’s season has ended after she decided to skip the last two national championships. The driver said she wanted an adequate break ahead of the 2009 season.
