THE Ministry of Environment is to start a tree-planting competition among the seven hills in Kampala. Launching a threemonth-long tree project at Mulago Hospital over the weekend, minister Maria Mutagamba said environmental mismanagement had lead to global warming and pollution.
“It is sad that such matters seem distant and irrelevant to our lives.†She said the habit of littering the streets was responsible for disease outbreaks.
“We may look at patients as being victims of nature, poverty and witchcraft yet their poor health is associated with bad environmental management,†she said.
Mutagamba praised Mulago administration for launching the tree planting project, saying it would make the city more green.
“The issues to address go beyond planting of trees and flowers. We will assist you to address drainage, sanitation and water management,†she promised.
The hospital’s executive director, Edward Ddumba, said health starts with a clean environment, safe water, sanitation and good nutrition. “This exercise is a step in the right direction,†he added.
