THE UN has hailed Uganda for controlling its population growth rate, one of the highest in the world.

The new UN Population Fund representative to Uganda, Janet Jackson, said the Government’s move to have a population policy would reduce the growth rate that currently stands at 3.4%.

“The fact that the Government has set up a national population council is good,” Jackson said recently while meeting the finance state minister, Fred Omach.

She said the UN was committed to helping Uganda implement the policy.

“The discussion on a population bonus is not a thing for Uganda only but for the world over. It’s worth noting that Uganda is moving towards the right direction because the policy is women-focused.”

Omach said the Government was using a gradual approach to tackle the population problem.
