RWANDAN president Paul Kagame, an old boy of Old Kampala Secondary School, has donated funds for the construction of a proposed multi-billion ICT resource centre at the school.

However, Rwanda’s justice minister Tharcisse Karugarama, who announced the offer at the weekend, did not disclose the amount contributed.

Karugarama read Kagame’s message on Saturday during the celebrations to mark the school’s Platinum Jubilee at the campus.

The Rwandan president, who said he was proud to be among the notable former students, pledged to continue supporting the school.

“Our focus towards the development of this school will remain purposeful. The forum (students’ association) helps us to have intellectual discussions and share experiences,” he noted.

The school turned 75 years last year but the commemoration was postponed because it coincided with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.

The mixed government-day school with 2,700 students was founded in 1932 by K.D Gupta, an Asian.

In a speech read by education minister Namirembe Bitamazire, President Yoweri Museveni urged teachers and parents to support the Government policy of promoting science-based education.

He noted that the world was changing so fast that the education sector needed to adopt science and technology as a means of spearheading development.

“We should embrace science because it marks the beginning of civilisation,” he said.

The President commended the authorities for initiating the ICT resource centre, noting that it was in line with the development path the country was taking.

Old Kampala should be hailed for contributing to the development of Uganda by training resourceful students, Museveni noted.

He said many of the old students joined him to liberate Uganda in the 1986 guerilla war.

Prominent old students at the event were Lt. Generals Katumba Wamala and Ivan Koreta.

Other old students are Lt. Gen. Moses Ali, General David Tinyefuza, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, Maj. Gen. Julius Oketa, Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya and NRM Vice-Chairman Moses Kigongo.

Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, FDC’s Jack Sabiti and Pastor Robert Kayanja also studied at the school.
