Inmates, especially those in upcountry prisons, are malnourished due to poor feeding, according to the Uganda Human Rights Commission report.

Josephine Maseruka writes that a recent report by the commission indicated that the food provided to the inmates was not only “insufficient in quantity but also of low nutritional value.”

The Prisons chief, Johnson Byabashaija, said the department was being under-funded because out of the sh14b needed to feed prisoners annually, less than sh7b is allocated.

The population of inmates fluctuates between 26,000 and 30,000 countrywide, Byabashaija added.

They mostly feed on posho and beans daily.
