Soroti county MP Peter Omollo has challenged the Government to protect communities threatened with eviction from their land.

Omollo urged the Government to support the land fund, saying it had failed to do so yet it had staked sh3b.

Omollo, a member of the parliamentary committee on land, made the remarks on Thursday during a consultative meeting with the public in Tororo town.

“The last time the Government showed commitment over the plight of the wretched communities, which have fallen prey to land grabbers, was at the climax of the Basongora land conflict (in western Uganda). Since then, nothing has been added on the land fund,” said the MP.

“Thousands of under-privileged people are being evicted from their land by wealthy people who connive with the local leaders,” Omollo added.

He said the victims could not get justice because they lacked money to hire lawyers to defend their rights. He said many land grabbers were posing as ing as investors.
