PUT God first in your endeavours and guard against HIV/AIDS to achieve success, Uganda Peoples Defence Forces soldiers have been told.
The chief of staff of the Land Forces, Brig. Charles Angina, said by being disciplined, the soldiers would make the drive to professionalise the army easier.
Angina, who was on Friday speaking during the decoration ceremony of newly-promoted and commissioned officers, attributed individual successes to God, adding that the people who shun God cheat themselves.
“You may say the promotions were given to you by the commander-in-chief, who is the President but you must know that it is because of God that he is there and [it was] through God’s wisdom that he thought you worthy of promotion,†he told the officers at the headquarters of the land forces in Bombo near Kampala
The Bombo Camp commandant, Brig. Hussein Adda told the officers that the promotion meant additional roles.
“It is not for fun. It does not mean that you become a chairman of some local club or malwa (local brew) group. It means more responsibilities to command.â€
He also warned the officers against misbehavior, saying it could cost them the new ranks.
“If you misbehave, it takes a short time to reduce you from where you are,†Adda warned.
A total of 61 officers, many accompanied by their spouses, took part in the ceremony. They are part of the 124 officers President Yoweri Museveni promoted recently.
The Bombo ceremony was held parallel to others in other military barracks across the country. The army has decentralised the decoration and pipping ceremonies from Bombo.
Angina also cautioned the officers that the promotions did not mean that they now had more money and should marry more wives.
“Those of you who think that you have arrived are mistaken. You will only make things very difficult for yourselves by getting additional wives,†he said.
“Stick to this one wife you have had and use the promotion as an opportunity to give your family a better quality of life.â€
