A modern pit latrine has been constructed at Kalerwe Market to contain cholera. The project is funded by Water Aid and will serve over 15,000 people.

David Ssemwanga, the Kawempe Division health inspector, said the toilet would ensure good sanitation in the area.

Ssemwanga was last week briefing the UK-based donors about the project during a function at the division’s headquarters in Kampala.

He said the project had aided the monitoring of the health and water sanitation in the community.
The health inspector added that a community sanitation centre had been put up design optional facilities that suite the area.

Ssemwanga said the benefiting areas were prone to water-borne diseases, especially during rainy seasons.

He, however, noted that in the recent past, there had been no reports of cholera in Kyebando, Bwaise II and Mulago III.

Lisa Martin, the Water Aid senior media officer, was among the people who toured projects supported by Water Aid in Bwaise, Kyebando, Mulago III and Kifumbira. He said sh36m was earmarked for development projects.

“It is amazing to see that the local communities have done a commendable job,” Lisa said.

Najjuma Namukasa, an elderly resident, said she was happy that the eco-san toilet were in place, adding that she wished they would allow her sleep inside, especially during the floods.
