Consider fate of Ugandans in Iraq

EDITOR — According to a friend doing kyeyo (an odd job) in Iraq, life is not the best. Before the labour minister and MP Rushenyi county, Mwesigwa Rukutana, makes a desk assessment of the Iraq ordeal, he should visit Iraq and report to Parliament about the fate of Ugandans in war-torn Iraq.

In 2005, when the first Ugandans left for Iraq, there was a heated debate about the deal being done by an army officer who was more interested in money than Ugandans’ welfare. The MPs who raised this concern were ignored by other members who said every Ugandan had a right to employment abroad.

My cry to the labour ministry and the Workers’ MP, Sam Lyomokyi, is to organise a visit and come up with a report. This will put our hearts at rest, especially if the report is genuine.
