Critics anger UTODA over welfare fees

THE general secretary of the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA), Chris Ssengoba, has lashed out at the critics of the welfare fee as being selfish.

THE general secretary of the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA), Chris Ssengoba, has lashed out at the critics of the welfare fee as being selfish.
He told the press at UTODA offices on Friday that those opposed to the fee were failures who had been sacked due to non performance. Ssengoba noted that the fee helped drivers during crises.
“Those complaining about the fee were leaders and fell out,†he said.
Town bound taxis pay sh3,000 on every route, while those plying up country routes pay between sh20,000 and sh30,000 depending on the journey.
The non receipted fee, which is anticipated to amount up to sh75.6b annually, has since caused controversy.
A splinter group under the umbrella organisation Commercial Taxi Owners and Drivers Association opposed the fee, saying it was meant to benefit UTODA officials.
Drivers and conductors were also discontented with the collection of the fee.
