AN inmate was on Sunday beaten to death by his colleagues while in detention at Old Kampala Police Station.

Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga yesterday identified the deceased as Vincent Baguma, a resident of Muzaana Zone in Kisenyi.

He was arrested on Saturday over allegations of theft.

Those accused of killing Baguma are Vincent Kaye of Kasaato Zone in Kisenyi facing charges of theft, Saleh Kibira, a businessman of Luzige Zone and Sam Mayambala of Kakajjo Zone in the Central Division.

He was arrested over robbing sh200,000.

Others were David Mwanje of Nakulabye facing defilement charges and Edward Muhirwa of Nakulabye on theft charges.

The five suspects were yesterday transferred to the Central Police Station and would be taken to the court to face other charges of murder, Nsubuga said.

He said a Special Police Constable who was guarding the cells, Vianey Lomuge, was also being held to help the force investigate the incident.

“We are investigating the circumstances under which the inmate died and find out why the cell guard could not rescue this man.”

Nsubuga said Baguma’s body was taken to the city mortuary at Mulago Hospital.

The district Police commander, Moses Mwanga, said the Baguma sustained several injuries due to flogging.

However, he added, the Police did not recover any tool that could have been used in the fight.

Mwanga said they were obtaining statements from other inmates at Old Kampala.

He explained that inmates often tend to tease their colleagues. “We believe that the scuffle started in a joking way and the man screamed. But the guards took long to know what was happening,” he said.
