Mbarara Town Clerk David Naluwayiro has warned people living with HIV against believing in witchdoctors who claim to cure AIDS.

Naluwayiro said such witchdoctors had increased the spread of the disease and therefore should be stopped.

“Do not go to witchdoctors. I know they have been deceiving you with herbs that they cure AIDS, their drugs are fake, you should stop using them,” he warned.

Naluwayiro, a founder of The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) Jinja branch, sounded the warning while closing the TASO week at Mbarara Independence Park on Thursday.

The Mbarara TASO week took place under the theme “Scaling up HIV Prevention”.

He advised people not to shy away from HIV testing because it helps to know one’s status so that the positive ones can use ARVs.

The town clerk also urged HIV-negative group to protect themselves against infection and the married to be faithful.

He called for concerted efforts in fighting the AIDS pandemic rather than fighting people living with AIDS.

Naluwayiro called on partners to join hands and be good ambassadors in fighting AIDS.

The Mbarara mayor, Wilson Tumwine, asked women and girls to carry condoms in their bags.

He said this would prevent occurences of unprotected sex which is the commonest way of AIDS spread today.
