The Omukama of Bunyoro Kingdom, Solomon Iguru, has expressed concern over the influx of people seeking to acquire land in Bunyoro as a result of oil discovery.

“People are rushing to acquire land here. Be careful and protect your land. Our future generation depends on it,” he said.

The Omukama was swearing in 10 members of the newly-elected Bunyoro land board at the Karuzika palace in Hoima town on Saturday.

He regretted the long-standing land problems in Kibaale and Bulisa districts and asked the people to be cautious.

“You are aware of the land problems we have in Kibaale and other areas in this kingdom. If you are not careful, these people will buy you off and you become squatters on your own land.”

Iguru castigated the local leaders, who sell public land and convince others to sell land to foreigners.

He urged his subjects to denounce such leaders and reserve the land for their children.

“Many people are going to approach you asking you to sell your land but turn them down. The first plan you can make for your children is to acquire land for them,”

Iguru emphasised that the land board would seek legal redress to recover the kingdom’s land.
