THE Office of the Prime Minister has set aside sh2.8b for the rehabilitation and construction of landing sites in districts under the Peace Recovery and Development Programme (PRDP), the Budiope MP has said.

Henry Balikowa was addressing residents of Bukungu landing site in Kidera sub-county recently, after inspecting the new site where the Bukungu Development Fisheries and Ice Production plant is being constructed. He said the plant will be ready by January.

“Piers will be constructed on Lake Kyoga to enable boat to land between Kamuli, Amolatar and other surrounding districts, to boost economic development,” he said.

He said the Government allocated sh800m for the engineering designs, monitoring and tarmacking of the Kamuli-Bukungu highway.

“This is the President’s pledge to address the issue of improved transportation, economic development and part of the PRDP funds meant to develop districts that were partly affected by the insurgency in the north and eastern region,” he said.

Balikowa urged the residents to engage in agricultural production.

“You should not only rely on fishing but consider cultivation of Irish potatoes and water melon, which will increase your incomes and standard of living,” Balikowa said.

Kamuli resident district commissioner Hajji Asadu Lutale decried the increasing insecurity on Lake Kyoga and the illegal fishing methods used by some fishermen.

“Technical fisheries offices and Beach Management Unit (BMU) officers are corrupt. They take bribes, promoting poor fishing methods by use of illegal fishing nets,” Lutale said.
