THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has been asked to change the Ssembabule district Police staff.

The resident district commissioner (RDC), Sserwano Kabogorwa, in his report to Kayihura, said the Police was responsible for the rampant thefts of Government motorcycles in the district.

He said over five motorcycles had been stolen at the district central Police station, where they were kept.

He said the Police officers connive with thugs to steal the vehicles.

“The district Police has become a source of insecurity. We receive overwhelming cases of corruption and now Government property is being stolen at the Police station! The officers are a disgrace to our community,” he said.

The southern regional Police commander, Andrew Sorowen, said two policemen had been arrested in connection with the thefts. Those arrested are Godfrey Japien and Jackson Kanywagi.

Sorowen said he had dispatched a team of criminal investigation officers led by the regional chief, Willy Panuha, to establish the efficiency of the Police.

He said one of the victims was a forest ranger, Ronald Mwanani, whose motorcycle was stolen on October 24.
The district accounts examiner, Kenneth Natumanya, also lost his motorcycle on October 28, he added.

“What puzzles us is that the chain-locks were not cut, which means someone opened the locks,” Sorowen said.
He disclosed that thefts of Government motorcycles were rampant in Rakai, Ssembabule, Masaka and Lyantonde districts.
