STATE sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi has called on National Olympic Committees to improve on their transparency and use sports as a tool for development.

Opening the two-day Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) secretary generals conference at Imperial Royale Hotel yesterday, Bakkabulindi also asked Olympic committees to work towards improving their relationship with government.

“It is important to note that national governments play an active role in developing and supporting sports at all levels. We don’t interfere,” the minister explained before declaring the meeting open.

“We come in to normalise issues because it’s our responsibility and mandate.”

The conference has attracted over 50 countries.

Bakkabulindi warned sports federations that alienate governments and rely more on international bodies, saying there is no way the full potential of sports development can be realised in such a situation.

“You need us and we need you, so we should work as a team to develop sports since this requires teamwork,” the minister said adding that the use of sports as a tool of development is crucial in this era.

“I have a belief that the conference will provide a synopsis of key findings and recommendations to all involved parties, which will help increase the efficiency and effective management of sports,” he added.

ANOCA president Lassana Palenfo said that they have supported the youth in sports through UNHCR programmes.
