Kyambogo University Council is investigating claims that some security guards are serving as part-time lecturers in the institution.

In a memo dated November 5, to the university management, the council said it had been informed about some guards who are teaching and pursuing various academic programmes.

“This is likely to affect their performance as security guards,” the memo obtained by The New Vision reads in part.

A source said the members were enraged about the claims in a meeting on October 31.

“It means they want to earn double salary if they are teaching and pursuing degrees. That means our security has been compromised,” a university official, who did not want to be named, said.

The university council chairman, James Kaleebo denied the reports. “I have heard is that some security personnel are pursuing academic courses. But I am not aware that they are teaching,” Kaleebo said on phone.

The council, however, directed that the security boss be replaced as his performance was wanting.

“It was resolved that the university seeks secondment from the Uganda Police to replace the chief security officer,” the memo reads. The representative of the non-teaching staff to the council, Solomon Ongora, said he was only aware of a former security guard who is now lecturer.

“There is one person who used to be a guard, but he upgraded and now has a first-class degree and the required qualification to teach,” Ongora said.

“It is just that the appointments have not yet been streamlined, but most people who are teaching have upgraded.”

The university spokesperson, James Bulenzibuto, said: “There is a criteria to appoint both part-time and full-time teaching assistants.

That means one must have the required qualification to become a teaching assistant. If those appointed are guards with the required qualification, I think that is not an issue.”
