OPPOSITION MPs have demanded for facts from the Government regarding the planned deployment of Ugandan troops in Somalia.

They said they needed to be convinced before approving the deployment.

Meeting at the Parliament Buildings yesterday, the MPs agreed to discuss the matter with their party leaders and present their position when the matter comes up for debate in Parliament.

“Government should have briefed me as Leader of the Opposition,” Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo said on telephone yesterday after the closed meeting.

“We are going to get further clarification from the Ministry of Defence on what it means to deploy.”

Latigo revealed that two sides emerged during their discussions: One group said it was not right to deploy troops in the war-torn country. Another said the MPs must objectively consider the matter.

Among the issues they want the Government to throw light on is the role of the troops, who is to meet the cost of the deployment, what the troops’ entitlements would be, on whose request are they going and how Uganda would benefit from the deployment.
