FIRST Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the East African Federation, Eriya Kategaya, has underscored the need for a regional political federation. He stressed that a customs union alone is not enough.

In a statement to Parliament yesterday, Kategaya said the economic integration of African countries is not enough, given the strategic security of the African people.

“There is therefore an urgent need to accelerate political integration to provide impetus to economic integration for the benefit of the present and future generations of Africa,” he stated.

Quoting President Yoweri Museveni, Kategaya said economic integration tends to be slow in the absence of political integration, and that the benefits under purely economic integration take longer to spread.
