A FARMER lost his life on Sunday as he tried to reclaim his cattle from a local defence unit guard (LDU) who had impounded them.

The Police said Posiano Kwatirayo shot Jackson Niwamanya in the forehead on Thursday, as he tried to negotiate the release of cattle that had broken into an antemesia garden.

Kwatirayo was guarding the garden in Murambo, Bubare in Kabale district, when the incident occurred.

The acting district CID chief, Jackson Mugisha, said Kwatorayo has since disappeared with an AK47.

He said: “We are investigating the matter and have mounted a search for the suspect.”

He added that they were not involved in the recruitment and deployment of LDUs. He said the LDUs were ill-trained and that instead of protecting locals and their property, they were involved in criminal acts.

Resident district commissioner Capt. James Mwesigye (right) said they would investigate cases of indiscipline in the LDU force in the district.
