BRUSSELS, Monday - The European Commission yesterday removed a Thai and an East African airline from its list of carriers facing bans or restrictions in EU skies.

BRUSSELS, Monday - The European Commission yesterday removed a Thai and an East African airline from its list of carriers facing bans or restrictions in EU skies.

Phuket Air of Thailand and DAS Air Cargo/Dairo Air Service of Uganda and Kenya were removed from the list in its third update since being drawn up last year after a series of deadly crashes.

The European Union’s executive arm said that the airlines had taken measures to correct the safety problems that had landed them on the danger list.

“For the first time, two carriers have been withdrawn from the blacklist after taking decisive action to remedy their failings,” said EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot.

“This shows that our list acts not only as essential protection against unsafe operations, but also as a strong and effective incentive for companies who deviate from international safety norms to address their shortcomings,” he added.

The commission banned 10 new carriers, including four in Kyrgyzstan, one in Equatorial Guinea and five in the DR Congo.

Pakistan International Airlines was restricted to flying in the EU with only its Boeing 777 aircraft, while restrictions on Sudanese airline Air West were upgraded to an outright ban on the carrier.
