A meat-processing plant worth $7m (sh12.2b) targeting the Egyptian market has been established at Munyonyo, Kampala, the company’s chairman has revealed.

“Nile Valley Meat Impex is on Salaama Road. We have processed two shipments of fresh and frozen meat and sent them to Egypt as samples. We expect good results. Uganda’s meat is of a good quality because the cows eat natural grass,” Eng. Abdel Hamid Amer explained.

“There is a big export potential for Uganda because Egypt has more than 75 million people and about seven million heads of cattle. Uganda has less people but with eight million heads of cattle,” Amer said in an interview at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

He said they had started with 100 tonnes of meat and intend to produce 150 tonnes to be shipped weekly.
Amer said they had carried out a feasibility study of all ranches and slaughter houses in Uganda.
He said they want to promote trade between Uganda and Egypt.
