THE recent impounding of the district grader by the Police after it was illegally hired out in Nakaseke, has sparked off an uproar among the councillors.

According to the councillors, there has been rampant misuse of the district road equipment for personal gain.

The grader was impounded after it was found with a private contractor, who was using it at a road construction site in the neighbouring Nakaseke district.

The police’s move followed a complaint by the Luweero chief administrative officer, Dan Iga, who said the grader had been diverted from Ndejje, where it had been officially deployed.

A foreman in the works department, Charles Semakula and a grader operator, James Mugisha, were summoned by the Police.

There are also revelations that the grader is regularly hired out at between sh500,000 and sh600,000 a day, but the proceeds do not go to the district treasury.

On the day it was impounded, it is alleged that the staff in the works department had hired it out to OAKS Construction Company, to carry out road works in Kikamulo sub-county, Nakaseke.
