TWO things happened during last Sunday’s Idols West Africa Top 24 contest that probably made our hearts glad. First, we learnt that not all West Africans can sing like a dream, which was a change from the first group of six who literally blew everybody away with their performances.

Second, we found out on Monday, that all the judges’ favourites were shown the door by voters so, who is afraid of the big, bad judges?

The Idols West Africa reality show has been showing on M-Net for the last couple of months. From last week, the thousands of hopefuls had been cut down to 24 by the three judges, American-born radio presenter Danny, Ghanaian singer Nana, and Fela Kuti protégé Dede from Nigeria.

The 24 were broken up into groups of six. The first group made many people believers and gave East Africans a serious reality check. (As in is there something in our genetic make up that makes us inferior to the West Africans?) But group two just did not have what it takes, although two of them had to make it to the last 10.

All the performances were under par and even the judges let it be known that they were not impressed.

At the end, Eric, the Sierra Leonean and Jerrilyn, the 23-year-old student from Liberia who lives in Calabar, were announced winners of the second group, and took their places in the Top 10.

Nana said Eric was sexy. Maybe that is why he was voted in because he did not sing that well. However, Jerrilyn did put up a great effort.

The third group will perform this Sunday.
Incidentally, could somebody shoot the costume consultant? Surely they could do better than make the contestants look like they are stuck in some 18th Century movie.
