WEST Africans finally saw the light and agreed with me who the good singers are. The third group of six from the Top 24 in M-Net’s Idols West Africa took to the stage last Sunday and some of the performances were hilarious.

Ama, 18, was nervous and it showed. It did not help that she had nice legs, as judge Danny said, but she looked just about dead on stage. Ernest was almost a no-show and very forgettable.

Then there was Confidence, who made it as a runner-up when the initial winner withdrew. In the on-screen interview, she sang out almost all answers to the questions, but when it came to singing, she bombed Dido’s Thank You. She sang in a criminally low key for a woman.

But the biggest crime was committed by Michael; first he came out all yellow – yellow pants, yellow shirt, even yellow hair! And then he killed Madonna’s Take A Bow, “... just sang the sweetness out of it,” as judge Dede said. However, Michael said he was trying to make it his own. Obviously no one was impressed.

That left the tallest contestant, Mercy (6’3”), who has a degree in microbiology and the shortest, Jodie, 23, who is a Mass Communication graduate.

They saved the day, with Mercy singing Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares To You, and Jodie, whose rendition of Bryan Adams’ Have You Ever Loved a woman, brought a standing ovation from two judges and the audience.

The two join Omawumi and Timi from Group A and Eric and Jerrilyn from Group B.

This Sunday we shall see the last of the top 24 contestants for another two spots in the Top 10, and then the real contest begins.
