ARCHERY will at long last open up to all interested sportsmen and women after getting a kit boost worth sh80m from Strartford Archery Club in United Kingdom.

The boost, delivered at the Uganda Olympic Committee offices by coaches Daryn Radcliffe and Andy Westmacott, contains a set of the modern gadgets used at international competitions. The duo had also trained some Ugandans on how to use the equipment with the help of former Olympian Margaret Tumusiime.

The equipment was handed over to local Olympic committee president Maj. Gen. Francis Nyangweso.

“It was a result of a fundraising drive by the club before Christmas. We had read an article of how Butabika Club has no equipment and we tried to seek ways of helping Ugandans. We are looking at a better working relationship and seeing the Uganda archers at international competitions,” said Radcliffe at the handover ceremony Friday evening.

As a result, the vice chairman administration of the local archery federation Charles Collins Onzima said that the sport will now open up, since they have enough equipment.

“Basically, the equipment is so expensive and there is no way we could extend the sport. But now that we have got a helping hand, we would like to assure you that after two years, it will be a different story,” he promised.

Nyangweso advised the federation to use the new equipment for the right purpose and also lobby for more training and funding from the Olympic Solidarity, since they have got the basic skills and kit.
