IN an effort to support girl-child education, Old Budonians have contributed over 500,000 towards the school fees of one girl at the school. The money was handed over at a fundraising dinner held on April 14 at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

The dinner, under the theme ‘Celebrating Femininity’, was organised by Makerere University Old Budonians club –– an association of Old Budonians attending Makerere and other universities.
Sh70,000 was also raised from an auction during the dinner.

This is part of the association’s annual contribution to support brilliant girls at the school whose parents cannot pay school fees in time. The money was received on behalf of the beneficiary, Mrs. Sarah Ntiro, one of the first girls educated at Budo and East Africa’s first woman graduate. She was the guest of honour.

Ntiro commended Old Budonians for boosting girl child education and keeping the spirit of excellence.

“It was a tradition for people to marry off their girls at a young age. But Budo realised that girls deserved to be educated. This gesture is proof that it was worth educating the girl- child,” she said.

Ntiro reiterated the enormous challenges facing girls in their efforts to attain an education.

“Some girls do not perform academically well because they are afraid of being branded clever, some shy away from doing sciences because the discipline is regarded as a boys’ territory. Others have been sexually harassed and not knowing how to deal with the problem, indulge in self-pity.

Some have been harassed by fellow women who want to pull others down,” she said.

She urged people in positions of influence to further support girl-child education as one of the solutions to some of these challenges.

The function was attended by the headteacher, George William Ssemivule, Old Budonians from different universities as well as current and outgoing members of the club.

The Old Budonians Club contributes towards girls education through various fundraising activities and initiatives. The club hopes to raise funds for other requirements for girls and rewarding those who excel.
