SIR — On Saturday, officials from Kampala city council headed by the town engineer shocked residents of Jinja Road police barracks. They made an abrupt stopover on Archer Road and warned the wives and daughters of policemen there that their kiosks would be pulled down and gave them one week to vacate the place and relocated elsewhere!

The KCC officials were escorted by their law enforcement officers and accompanied by WBS journalists.

It is amazing that KCC can act in such a manner. They claimed that they were directed to act quickly since it was a chogm arrangement! These kiosks help policemen and their families to eke a living, given their poor pay.

The only nearby shopping area in Nakawa market is about three kilometres away. If, for instance, one needs to buy a piece of soap of sh200 or paraffin of the same amount, should one travel to Nakawa at night to buy such items?

These kiosks are also cheap restaurants which not only serve police officers but also other people from the industrial area. KCC should reconsider their decision.
