BUSINESS at Arua district headquarters was brought to a standstill on Friday as court brokers confiscated office furniture over unpaid debts.

The district is alleged to have failed to pay sh2.6m to Greenmark Associates, a bailiff firm that recovered debts the district owed to a motor repair company called Tosumi Autospares and Glassmart.

The motor firm last year dragged the district to court for failing to pay sh51m meant for the repair of district vehicles. The district lost the case and Greenmark Associates were assigned to recover the debts.

The district cleared the motor repair debt but failed to pay the bailiff costs. Robert Mugabe, a bailiff, said they attached 10 chairs, four filing cabinets and three sofa sets from the chief administrative officer and his deputy’s offices.

Both officials were away for lunch and their secretaries looked on in disbelief as the property was taken away. Mugabe said they would sell the items seize more property if the amount raised was not enough.
