MAKERERE University East African School of Library and Information Science will expand its infrastructure to provide adequate facilities for students’ learning and research. The school will put up a complex estimated at $1,015,000 (sh1.7b).

Dr. Elisam Magara, the school’s director, revealed this while presenting a paper on The repositioning of Makerere to meet the emerging development challenges at Ridar Hotel in Mukono, recently

“The new structure will house a model teaching library, which will act as the clinic and incubation centre for information, with staff ready to serve students and other people through the basic skills on how to get the required information,” he explained.

He said a collection of textbooks, books for supplement reading, current literature, periodicals and dissertations by staff and students will be available in the library.

Currently, there are four lecture rooms, a library, four stores and 15 offices at the school, which Magara said were inadequate for the growing number of students.

James Okello, the university deputy registrar for senate affairs, urged the staff to ensure quality.

“We need to improve the quantity and quality of graduates, research and academic services so that the public can have trust and confidence in the university.”

Prof. David Bakibinga, the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of finance and administration, urged faculties to integrate their strategic plan into that of the university.

“You must have short-term action plans each year to evaluate whether the long-term plan will succeed.”

Bakibinga said the move by the school to expand will provide a conducive environment for learning and for starting up new courses, especially during holidays.
