UGANDA’s prime boxing promotional company Big Strikers International are in a drive to raise $55,000 (sh93.5m) to host Commonwealth title fights this year.

“Our target this year is to host two Commonwealth championship fights however we need $55,000 (sh93.5m) to successfully organise them,” Geoffrey Kasule, Big Strikers spokesman said.

“We are appealing to well wishers, the boxing fraternity, former boxers in the diaspora to help us fulfil this undertaking. This is an issue that calls for collective attention from the public.”

Big Strikers’ top prospects, Africa light middleweight Badru “Mr Crush”Lusambya, is challenging for the Commonwealth welterweight belt against Namibian champion Ali “The Silent Assassin” Nuumbembe while lightweight Peter “Boyz Boyz” Ssemo, is lined up to challenge Commonwealth lightweight champion Willie Limond, from Scotland.

Ssemo is meanwhile, preparing for a Commonwealth eliminator fight against Tanzanian Silvester “Rambo” Kimbe later this month.

Lusambya’s promoters have started negotiations with the Namibian's camp to accept a challenge later in the year.
“The negotiations are going on and we believe that we shall reach an agreement soon,” Kasule said.

“We hope to come up with a conclusive answer soon.”
Uganda’s Jackson “Action” Asiku, is the current Commonwealth featherweight champion and is expected to defend the crown in September.

The funds, once realised, will go towards paying sanction fees, the belts, the fighters purse, accommodation for commonwealth boxing officials in five or four star hotels.

r The world title fight between champion Anthony Mundine and Pablo Zamora Nievas next month should be cancelled to prevent the challenger suffering serious injury, a group representing Australian doctors said on Saturday.

Australian Mundine, a former rugby player, is scheduled to defend his super middleweight WBA title against Argentina’s inexperienced Nievas on June 27.

The Australian Medical Association said the fight should not take place because Nievas, who has never fought more than six professional rounds, could suffer damage.
