THE Minister of Energy and Minerals, Daudi Migereko, has called for massive sensitisation of the public about the causes of stroke as a measure to prevent the disease.

Stroke is mainly caused by a blockage that prevents blood from flowing to the brain. Migereko asked the people to look after themselves to guard against developing the disease. “We have been advised to keep optimum weight to prevent stroke.”

Migereko was launching a stroke prevention camp at Jinja Hospital on Saturday. The camp was carried out in partnership with the Rotary clubs of Jinja, Muyenga and the Source of the Nile.

Migereko thanked Dr. Edward Ddumba, the chairman of the Stroke Prevention Society of Uganda, for extending services nearer to the people.

“The population is high yet facilities in hospitals are not enough. The Government is at the forefront of fighting preventable disease to promote a strong and productive society.”

Participants at the camp had their weight, height and blood pressure measured beside the sensitisation. Ddumba said they would prevent and minimise the effects of stroke on the people of Uganda.

He stated that stroke could be prevented through regular exercise, having a healthy diet, limiting sugar and salt intake, regulate alcohol and cigarette consumption.

Other measures include medical checks at least once a year and controlling blood sugar for the diabetic.
