A cultural village for CHOGM will be constructed at the Uganda Museum along Kira road in Kamwokya. “The village will present the architectural heritage of the different societies in Uganda. We shall exhibit cultural items including those that are hidden in our homes, kept for our ritual purposes,†said the Commissioner for Museums and Monuments Dr. Ephraim Kamuhangire.
He said that after CHOGM, these villages will remain and be turned into permanent units that are to become tourist attractions in addition to the museum.
“However at the moment, officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry have been sent into the districts to identify artists who would perform at the village for the CHOGM guests,†he said.
He urged district officials to start planning for establishment of museums at the district level.
“Mugabe Palace in Mbarara and the old palace in Kabarole are reserved as palaces but can be developed into museums,†he said.
He noted that Ham Mukasa house in Mengo, Nadiope’s house in Kamuli, mass graves in Luwero, war memorials, military museums can all be developed into tourist sites.
