COMMONWEALTH Secretary General Don mcKinnon is expected today for the commonwealth Women Affairs Ministers Meeting that began yesterday. This will be part of his East and Southern Africa tour, according to a statement from the secretariat.

“The Women Ministers meeting is one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the world this year,” McKinnon said ahead of his visit.

“The mathematics of the context of the meeting is as simple as it is shocking: women bear two-thirds of the burden of poverty, illiteracy, ill-health and marginalisation on this planet.

“Our talks will focus on the funding needed to bring about true gender equality. The meeting reflects the growing awareness that funding women’s rights and gender equality are being overlooked.”

McKinnon will also meet President Yoweri Museveni to discuss preparations for the forthcoming CHOGM to be held in Kampala.

He will tour several CHOGM sites and facilities before delivering a lecture on Monday.
