A MAKERERE University student died yesterday morning after falling off the balcony of his hostel.
Anthony Ngato Omondi, a second-year student of technology, died at Mulago Hospital at 2:00am.

The Dean of Students, John Ekudu, said the tragedy occurred at 11:00pm at Royal Hostel on Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road.

“He was standing with his girlfriend at the balcony on one of the top-most floors. People first saw items falling before Omondi hurtled to the ground.”

Ekudu could not tell whether Omondi just slipped and fell or jumped off the balcony. “We do not know what happened. We do not know whether there was an external factor. But the Police are investigating.”

The Police identified the girlfriend as Pauline Karanja, a Kenyan student at Makerere University Business School.

Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga said preliminary reports said Omondi plunged to his death as he reached for a clothes’ hanger.

“The detectives have gone there and we hope to get vital information.”

Nsubuga added that Karanja called the Police after Omondi had been taken to Mulago Hospital. The body was by yesterday still at the hospital mortuary.

Omondi’s death has occurred during the second semester examination period, which ends on June 23.
