Kilembe Mines has lost over sh100m to thieves in a period of seven months, the general manager, Fred Kyakonye Weraga, said on Wednesday, reports John Nzinjah.

“Thieves have vandalised and stolen electricity power supply wires worth sh100m, leaving the whole of Kanyaruboga village of Kilembe mines town in total darkness,” Weraga said during a security meeting with Kilembe sub-county leaders.

He said the company would not replace the wires and restore electricity supply in the affected village until the residents devised means to secure the area.

He challenged the leaders to lead investigations into the matter and identify the thieves so that they can be brought to book.

A former chairman of the sub-county, Johnson Kamalha, said he suspected the stolen copper wires were being taken to Kampala where they were being smelted and used to manufacture other products.

“Some people have told us that they smelt the wires to manufacture counterfeit sh500 coins,” Kamalha said.

The New Vision also learnt from a source at the meeting that Kilembe mines Ltd. had continuously been losing property through unexplained thefts.

Recently, a man was shot dead as he attempted to vandalise water pipes at the company.

Some of his colleagues were arrested while others are still on the run.
