THE education ministry should give local printers work to save them from bankruptcy instead of giving it to foreign firms, the vice-chairman of the Uganda Printers Association has suggested. “Text books should be printed in this country as it is done in Kenya and Tanzania. We have been asking the education ministry to give us work but they always set specifications that are too high. Only foreigners get the work,” Steven Wakida explained.

This was during the 2007 calendar awards at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel. “We hear that CHOGM printing work has been outsourced to South Africa and UK. If true, it is sad,” Wakida said.

Graphic Systems and Ignition won the best locally printed and locally designed calendar awards respectively. The New Vision Printing and Publishing Company won a consolation prize for best desk calendar.

Graphic Systems and Quick Colour Print won second and third prizes for best locally printed calendar respectively. Alastair Penny and Jezzy Designers won second and third prizes for best locally designed calendar respectively.

The investment state minister, Semakula Kiwanuka, asked the printers to export printed materials to Europe like the Kenyans.
