EU chief tours Karamoja region

THE head of the European Union, ambassador Vincent De Visscher, toured the Karamoja region last week. He said he travelled without military escorts from Karenga along the border between Kitgum and Kaabong to Moroto.

THE head of the European Union, ambassador Vincent De Visscher, toured the Karamoja region last week, writes Nathan Etengu.

He said he travelled without military escorts from Karenga along the border between Kitgum and Kaabong to Moroto.

“I wanted to see the developments and security situation in the Karamoja region,” he said.

De Visscher revealed that he would travel to Nakapiripirit to assess the security situation there.

He said he held discussions with the State Minister for the northern Uganda rehabilitation, David Wakikona, and leaders from the Acholi region, on the implementation of the EU funding to the north.

“I signed contracts worth 5m Euros (about sh11.5b) to support the resettlement of the displaced persons,” he said.

He added that he was impressed with the improvement in the security situation in the Karamoja region.
