ST. ALOYSIUS Girls Secondary School in Kabale was closed on Saturday following a strike by students who said they were given insufficient food rations. The teachers were also ordered to vacate their residences at the school immediately.

The Police deployed to stop the students from rioting. The headmistress, Sister Clare Migisha, blamed the teachers for inciting the students to strike, saying they were using the students to settle their scores with the administration.

“We have closed the school indefinitely and shall only open it after meeting with various stake-holders” Migisha said last week.

The teachers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were ordered to leave the school over the weekend without their belongings.

In a letter to the education ministry, 12 teachers demanded salary arrears and allowances of over sh800,000 each from 2006.

They added that the school board was conniving with the headmistress to cover up weaknesses in the administration.
