The Government has donated 25 motorcycles to sub-county chiefs in Kabale district for poverty eradication programmes.

Addressing beneficiaries at Rukiiko Hall on Monday, the microfinance state minister, Salim Saleh, said the Government had established a law to streamline the operations of microfinance institutions benefiting from the programme.

He was concerned that many people in the district were poor yet the area was endowed with natural resources.

Saleh amused the residents when he said the omuramba (local brew), could become a leading alcoholic drink if well packaged and branded.

He urged the local leaders to establish income-generating activities.

The minister also said the Government would not compensate residents defrauded by NGOs such as Caring for Orphans, Widows and the Elderly (COWE).

He, however, promised to have the issue addressed, adding that residents in most places he toured complained of a similar problem.

Henry Mbaguta, the assistant commissioner in the finance ministry, encouraged the locals to join saving and credit societies.

In attendance were the district LC5 chairman, Adison Kakuru, the resident district commissioner, Capt. James Mwesigye and the chief administrative officer, Joseph Mukasa.
