OVER 10,000 breast-feeding mothers in Pader district thronged the Acholibur playground in Aruu county to participate in the celebrations to mark the end of the World Breast Feeding Week on Friday.

This follows a campaign under the theme: breast feeding: 1st hour, early initiation and exclusive breast feeding can save one million babies” funded by UNICEF.

The district LC5 chairman, Peter Odok W’Oceng, encouraged women to breast feed their babies in the first hour of birth, adding that breast milk is very nutritious and good for the health of the babies.

In a message delivered by the district speaker, Charles Ray Okwir, Odok advised the mothers to breast feed their babies for at least six months before giving them supplementary food.

He also urged parents to ensure that their children are immunised in time now that health centres were within their reach.

Odok revealed that more maternity wards would be built and equipped to reduce the infant and maternal mortality rates.
He urged the residents to always sleep under mosquito nets to reduce cases of malaria.

“The Government has given the district five mini-ambulances to transport women in labour pain from the rural areas to the health centres,” he said.
