Monitor recruiting agencies closely

EDITOR—I have read with great dismay the manner in which Ugandan guards sent to Iraq are being ripped off. The scandal has been dragging on for too long. However, the labour commission has done a good job to expose the filth in the external employment agencies.

EDITOR—I have read with great dismay the manner in which Ugandan guards sent to Iraq are being ripped off. The scandal has been dragging on for too long. However, the labour commission has done a good job to expose the filth in the external employment agencies.

The way forward could now be for the government to do for us the following:

-Publicise all the licensed external employment agencies and clearly state modalities and requirements for recruitment, training and deployment.

-Outline the terms and conditions of service of each agency.
-Put a proper mechanism in place to ensure that guards’ personal accounts at home are not accessed through connivance of the banks and the employment agencies.

Short of these measures, it is a useless venture to continue risking the lives of the guards in such a hostile foreign land without any gain. On the other hand, guards should in future be cautioned to avoid being too desperate to fly out. It lures them to accept any condition dictated upon them by the agencies concerned without hesitation. It is very risky to trust most Ugandans with money!
